Our Quest to Rate Every Bloody Mary

A Fresh Start: Our Bloody Mary Journey Begins Anew

Years ago, when my wife and I first met, we bonded over many things, but one of the most unexpected was our mutual love for a drink that walks the line between breakfast and liquid brunch—yes, I’m talking about the Bloody Mary. With its savory mix of tomato juice, spices, and (if you’re lucky) some truly fun garnishes, this misunderstood morning beverage quickly became our thing.

As time went on, we made it a personal mission to rate every Bloody Mary we encountered. Wherever we went, the first thing we’d order was a Bloody Mary, notebook in hand, ready to capture our thoughts. That is, until one day, we lost that notebook—the worn-out journal filled with scribbled notes and memories of all the tomato-vodka concoctions we’d tasted. Devastated? Absolutely. But after mourning the loss of our beloved list, we decided it was time to start fresh, with a renewed sense of purpose and a better system. Now, everything is stored in the cloud, so we can’t lose it again.

Now, we’re back on track, and this time, we’ll be sharing our Bloody Mary ratings with all of you. We will be using a 5-point scale based on the following categories: look, garnish, taste, and consistency. We’ll average them out for an overall score and share any extra notes we think are worth mentioning. These scores are, of course, entirely subjective, based on our own tastes and experiences. You may not agree with our ratings, and that’s totally warranted. So, with all that said, let’s dive into our first stop on this new adventure—Blackbook in Palm Springs (and yes, we also recently had their veggie burger, which you can read about here).

Blackbook: The First Bloody Mary of Our New Chapter

Nestled in the heart of Palm Springs, Blackbook has quickly become one of our favorite spots when we find ourselves in the "low desert." With its laid-back vibe and impressive drink selection, it seemed like the perfect place to kick off our revamped Bloody Mary quest. As we sat down, the familiar anticipation crept in—the scent of tomato juice and spices filled the air, promising something good. And so, with our first sip, we were back in action.

The Breakdown

  • Look: The appearance was fairly average. The bright red color didn’t quite pop the way we hoped, and while it wasn’t bad by any means, it wasn’t exactly inspiring either.

    Rating: 3 / 5

  • Garnish: I’ll be honest here—the garnish wasn’t particularly exciting. There was a lemon wedge, a lime wedge, and an olive, which just felt a bit lacking in creativity. We were hoping for something more fun or unexpected to really elevate the presentation.

    Rating: 2.5 / 5

  • Taste: The flavor was solid, though not extraordinary. It had a good balance, and the spice level was spot-on for us—just enough heat to make its presence known but not overpowering. However, we could tell it was made with V8, which dulled much of the richness and complexity we usually look for.

    Rating: 3 / 5

  • Consistency: This is where Blackbook’s Bloody Mary really excelled. It had that perfect texture—thick enough to be hearty, but not so thick that it felt like you were sipping soup.

    Rating: 4 / 5

  • Overall Rating: Taking all the factors into account, Blackbook’s Bloody Mary scores a respectable 3.3 / 5. It’s a very decent drink, but the lack of garnish and the use of V8, for us, held it back from reaching greater heights.

Extra Notes:

One thing we have to applaud is the spiciness. It was perfect—not too much, but definitely noticeable. For those who love a Bloody with a bit of a kick, this one nails it.

Final Thoughts:

As we sipped the last of our drinks, we felt a renewed excitement for what’s to come. This isn’t just a quest to find the best Bloody Mary—it’s about the experiences we have, the places we visit, and the memories we make along the way. Blackbook was a solid start, but there are so many more Bloody Marys out there waiting for us, and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes us next.

So, grab a celery stick, and let’s raise a glass to new beginnings. The quest continues, one tomato-infused adventure at a time.

Until next time,
